How I fell in love with this form of expression
I fell in love with photography when I was 12 years old. I snuck into my big sister Jenny’s room and I found her big film SLR camera. I would pretend to take photos around her room and started dreaming about being a photographer! She was in a film photography class and had pictures hanging all over her walls. I was amazed at how I could just stare at the up close photos of the colorful candles our family made every year during Christmas. I was intrigued by the black and white photos of my sister playing guitar. It was around this time that I had my ‘aha moment’ about my love for photography and knew I was hooked for life!
In high school I experienced my first black and white film/darkroom photography class. I spent hours during and after school in the darkroom. My favorite memories were photographing Sedona in the early morning after a snowstorm. The snowy red rocks became my fantasy world and playground for my photography.
Finally, I received my own hand-me-down film camera. I was incredibly inspired and went crazy taking photographs on my family trips to Europe and around the country. Many of these photographs formed my very first portfolio and I was ecstatic to receive an art scholarship for my photography portfolio and projects.
I am proud to have graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Photography in 2013. Throughout my time studying photography my professors and peers gave me feedback and made me strive to be the best. One thing was very clear and that was that I loved doing portraits of my family. Portraits are appreciated by those in the photographs because they capture memories for a lifetime. My best work includes the photographs of my family, my friends, and the relationships between them. I was able to capture the subtle nuances that happen between family members. I learned to capture the intimacy that happens between family and friends, in a variety of settings. I excel at portraits because I believe close connections to family and friends is important. I feel that connecting with family and lovers is a huge gift in life and needs to be documented and photographed.
I love my job because I get to observe the special moments between families, friends, pets, lovers and the beauty of the environment which surrounds us everyday. It is a honor to work with others using photography as a tool to capture the feeling and the beauty that is within them. I continue to learn more about photography everyday by working with new clients, families, friends, and other photographers. I can not wait to meet your family or loved ones and work with you!
